Books for children about autism

There are lots of books out there to support children’s learning about autism.

Here are some of our favourites!

All My Stripes - A Story for Children with Autism
By Shaina Rudolph and Danielle Royer

All My Stripes depicts Zane, a young zebra who is worried that all people see is his ‘autism stripe’. Zane’s mum talks about how every ‘stripe’ (characteristic) he has is a part of him - without one of his stripes, Zane wouldn’t be the special zebra he is.

At the end of the book, there is a reading guide that talks about specific challenges or strengths raised in the story, and how to address them with your child.

We’re Amazing 1, 2, 3 - A Story About Friendship and Autism
By Sesame Street

Elmo has a new friend, Julia. Julia has autism. Julia plays and communicates differently than Elmo.

This book is great to teach other children a little about autism. You could even watch some Sesame Street videos with Julia in them! You can get this book in hard copy, or on your computer.

Uniquely Wired - A Story About Autism and It’s Gifts
By Julia Cook

Uniquely Wired depicts Zak, a young boy with Autism. This book encourages patience and understanding, as well as explains why children with autism behave in some ways e.g. hand flapping, or not making eye contact.

This book would be good for teaching siblings or classmates about autism.

I See Things Differently - A First Look At Autism
By Pat Thomas

I See Things Differently is a simple narrative that helps children to better understand siblings or classmates with autism. It has some discussion points throughout and at the end for extra learning!
